Tsunami hits Japan after massive quake

A 8.9-magnitude earthquake has triggered a tsunami along Japan's north-eastern coastline, and scores are feared killed. Cars, boats, homes and people were swept away as fires burned out of control.

 Aproximativ 600 de standuri au fost sigilate luni de comisarii Gărzii Financiare în timpul descinderii în depozitele complexului comercial "Dragonul Roşu" din Capitală, pentru că marfa nu avea documente de provenienţă, şi 40 de tone de marfă au fost confiscate în "Europa", potrivit ANAF.

Comisarii Gărzii Financiare şi inspectorii fiscali au confiscat, până în prezent, din depozitele complexului "Dragonul Roşu" 280.000 de farfurii, 150.000 de căni, 75.000 de sacoşe de rafie şi 30.000 de articole de bucătărie, se arată într-un comunicat de luni al Agenţiei Naţionale de Administrare Fiscală (ANAF).

La sosirea inspectorilor ANAF şi ai Gărzii Financiare, însoţiţi de aproximativ 60 de luptători ai Brigăzii Speciale de Intervenţie a Jandarmeriei, standurile erau închise.
În timpul controalelor, un elicopter de la Inspectoratul General de Aviaţie al Ministerului Administraţiei şi Internelor a survolat zona complexului "Europa", pentru a sprijini acţiunea comisarilor Gărzii Financiare.

Inspectorii financiari aveau informaţii că în complexul comercial "Europa" se comercializează şi sunt deţinute produse fără documente legale. Marfa ar proveni atât din ţări ale Uniunii Europene, precum şi din state din afara spaţiului UE.

În urma verificărilor, inspectorii financiari au constatat că evaziunea fiscală în zonă este de 100% şi că forma de deţinere a spaţiilor este în afara legii. (cotidianul.ro)

Sex slavery: A family business in Romania

When Marius Nejloveanu was sent to jail in January for 21 years, it was the longest sentence anyone had faced in Britain for human trafficking.

The judge said the 23-year-old Romanian, together with his 51-year-old father, Bogdan, had run a sex trafficking ring like a family business. They lured several women, then aged between 15 and 23 years old, from Romania to the brothels of Madrid and Manchester, where they forced them to work as prostitutes.

One of the girls, who wished to remain anonymous described her experiences in captivity. "I saw one of them removing the eye of a girl because she wasn't making enough money," the girl said. "Another time I saw them cut another girl's leg. They were all afraid to run away or tell the police. When they weren't happy with us, they took us away into a house and tortured us."

Defiant Gaddafi vows to die as martyr - 1,000 killed in Libya unrest

    (Reuters) - A defiant Muammar Gaddafi said on Tuesday he was ready to die "a martyr" in Libya, vowing to crush a growing revolt which has seen eastern regions break free of his 41-year rule and brought deadly unrest to the capital.
Swathed in brown robes, Gaddafi seethed with anger and banged the podium outside one of his residences that was damaged in a 1986 U.S. bombing raid that attempted to kill him. Next to him stood a monument of a fist crushing a U.S. fighter jet.

Greece strike turning violent in Athens

Young demonstrators hurled rocks and fire bombs at riot police as clashes broke out on Wednesday in Athens during a mass rally against austerity measures, part of a general strike that crippled services and public ransportation around the country. Police fired tear gas and flash grenades at protesters, blanketing parts of the city centre in choking smoke.

The future of the Arab world

Now Israeli authorities want to prevent democracy in Egypt as democracy, according to them, would mean Brotherhood coming to power. Earlier in Palestine when Hamas came to power through democratic elections, America and Israel refused to recognize elected Hamas Government. And whenever there are good prospects for democracy in any Islamic country the US rushes in to support dictatorships from Indonesia to the Arab world and then blames Islam for being anti-democratic. Hosni Mubarak’s dictatorship was supported by USA and Israel in their own interest and what is worse Israel’s interest is US interest. Today when Obama realized that Hosni Mubarak has totally lost support he is advising him to go to keep its credibility with the people of Egypt. But it will also see that someone is installed who acts in US-Israel interests.

SAUDI ARABIA - Leader: King Abdullah
The king has ruled Saudi Arabia since 2005. This included attacks and arrests of prominent opposition figures, the shutting down of newspapers and assaults on journalists critical of the government, and doling out international food aid as an incentive to get poor Ethiopians to join the ruling party.

UGANDA - Leader: Yoweri Museveni
Record: Museveni talks a big game on democracy, economic development, and anti-corruption efforts, and to be fair he did institute a number of promising reforms early in his presidency, encouraging the development of free press and elections following decades of strongman rule. But the president has lately started to resemble his predecessors, abolishing term limits after nearly three decades in office, launching legal attacks on independent journalists, harassing opposition parties and flying a $50 million private jet while more than a third of his people live on less than $1 a day, having previously criticized other African leaders for indulging in similar perks. NGOs have also documented numerous cases of unlawful detention and torture by the country's Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force.

UZBEKISTAN - Leader: Islam Karimov
Karimov, Uzbekistan's first and only post-independence president, has routinely stifled political dissent in Uzbekistan, banning opposition groups -- particularly Islamic ones -- stifling the press and jailing thousands. His country is routinely cited as one of the world's worst torturers, with punishments including beatings, rape, and even boiling meted out in its overcrowded jails. Uzbekistan faced international condemnation in 2005 after hundreds of unarmed protesters demonstrating in support of a group of arrested local businessmen were shot by security forces in the city of Andijan. Karimov has repeatedly extended his own tenure beyond the constitutionally mandated two-term limit and international observers have dismissed the country's elections as shams.

KAZAKHSTAN - Leader: Nursultan Nazarbayev
Nazarbayev, former leader of the Kazakh Communist Party, has ruled the country without any serious political challenge since independence in 1991. Restrictive election laws make it nearly impossible to opposition parties to run, anti-government newspapers are routinely harassed and shut down, and corruption -- particularly related to the country's energy sector -- is reportedly pervasive throughout the state.

VIETNAM - Leader: Nguyen Tan Dung
The Communist Party of Vietnam is the only party allowed by law and appoints the country's leaders from within its own ranks -- Nguyen Tan Dung was reappointed for a second term in Jan. 26. According to Human Rights Watch, Vietnam has intensified its repression of human rights over the past year, imprisoning human rights defenders, bloggers, and anti-corruption campaigners. Religious groups, both Christian and Buddhist, have faced repeated harassment. Police brutality and deaths under police custody are commonplace.

Will optimism save the euro? NO!

 2011 will be a “fateful year for the euro”, headlines the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, predicting that the survival of the single currency will be assured if the year ends on the same note of optimism on which it began – at least in Estonia, which has just transitioned to the euro. The secret to the euro’s success lies in trust, deems the German daily: trust between the strong and weak nations of the eurozone, but also between the EU and Hungary, which took over the rotating EU presidency on New Year’s day. "With its – often partisan – criticism of Budapest, the EU might in the long run come to resemble the snake that bites its own tail,” comments the FAZ, adding that “the six months to come will be decisive for the euro and will have need of an EU presidency that is not constantly on the defensive".Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Ilie Șerbănescu: băncile sunt într-un cartel!

Analistul economic Ilie Șerbănescu acuză băncile din România că au format un adevărat cartel.
 

”Ele sunt atâtea pentru că în România băncile sunt într-un cartel. Nu sunt într-o concurenţă. O piaţă mică în fond, de oameni săraci şi care mai e şi în cădere ar trebui să fi dispărut bănci universale sau neuniversale. Dar nu au dispărut pentru că sunt într-un cartel. Pentru că sunt toate bănci străine. Dacă ar fi româneşti ar fi dat unele faliment. La noi nu e piaţă, nu e concurenţă, nu e piaţă concurenţială”, a explicat, pentru Agerpres, Ilie Șerbănescu.

Analistul economic Ilie Serbanescu spune ca Romania nu va mai fi primita in zona euro si ca economia va continua si in 2011 sa resimta efectele politicilor nefaste din anii anteriori.

"Nu vedeti ca s-au lecuit de Romania? Nu mai vor sa ne primeasca nici in Schengen. Le-a venit mintea la cap. Astea sunt povesti politice (n.r. - ca tara noastra va adopta euro), de interese, gen Banca Nationala. Oamenii s-au prajit cu Grecia. Nu vor mai primi altii si mai si".

Asadar, povestile cu daca faceam, masuri anticriza daca etc. sunt povesti. Adica ce e anticriza? Masuri de stimulare a consumului. Cine sa plateasca? Statul e in faliment, iar bancile nu-ti mai dau bani pentru chestiile de consum. Asadar, nu avea de unde sa provina cresterea economica", a conchis Ilie Serbanescu.

"Este viitoarea etapă a mondializării, şi sunt motive bune de a dori ca acesta să nu fie cazul", constată Vanity Fair. Din ce în ce mai mult, laboratoarele farmaceutice americane îşi testează medicamentele în străinătate, pe persoane care nu beneficiază de toate garanţiile de siguranţă. Avantajul pentru laboratoare, explică Vanity Fair, este faptul că ele fac testele în condiţii mai puţin stricte şi mai puţin costisitoare, de a obţine rezultate pozitive şi "de a convinge astfel Food and Drug Administration că medicamentele sunt sigure şi eficace pentru americani". În 2008, 80% din produsele supuse FDA au fost testate în afara Statelor Unite, ceea ce reprezintă 58 788 de teste. 876 dintre ele au avut loc în România, 589 în Ucraina, 716 în Turcia. Estonia, Polonia, Rusia, Lituania, Slovacia sau Croaţia sunt şi ele ţări apreciate de laboratoare.
În afara oricărui control serios, aceste teste sunt adeseori mortale. Revista citează exemplul unui test pentru un vaccin contra gripei efectuat într-un refugiu pentru cei fără domiciliu fix, la Grudziadz, în Polonia. Wikileaks began on Sunday November 28th publishing 251,287 leaked United States embassy cables, the largest set of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain. The documents will give people around the world an unprecedented insight into US Government foreign activities.
The cables, which date from 1966 up until the end of February this year, contain confidential communications between 274 embassies in countries throughout the world and the State Department in Washington DC. 15,652 of the cables are classified Secret.
The embassy cables will be released in stages over the next few months. The subject matter of these cables is of such importance, and the geographical spread so broad, that to do otherwise would not do this material justice.
The cables show the extent of US spying on its allies and the UN; turning a blind eye to corruption and human rights abuse in "client states"; backroom deals with supposedly neutral countries; lobbying for US corporations; and the measures US diplomats take to advance those who have access to them.
This document release reveals the contradictions between the US’s public persona and what it says behind closed doors – and shows that if citizens in a democracy want their governments to reflect their wishes, they should ask to see what’s going on behind the scenes.
Every American schoolchild is taught that George Washington – the country’s first President – could not tell a lie. If the administrations of his successors lived up to the same principle, today’s document flood would be a mere embarrassment. Instead, the US Government has been warning governments -- even the most corrupt -- around the world about the coming leaks and is bracing itself for the exposures.
The full set consists of 251,287 documents, comprising 261,276,536 words (seven times the size of "The Iraq War Logs", the world's previously largest classified information release).
The cables cover from 28th December 1966 to 28th February 2010 and originate from 274 embassies, consulates and diplomatic missions.

Campanie internațională organizata împotriva băncilor: 7 decembrie - ziua retragerii generale

Military Study Warns of a Potentially Drastic Oil Crisis

  A study by a German military think tank has analyzed how "peak oil" might change the global economy. The internal draft document -- leaked on the Internet -- shows for the first time how carefully the German government has considered a potential energy crisis.

The term "peak oil" is used by energy experts to refer to a point in time when global oil reserves pass their zenith and production gradually begins to decline. This would result in a permanent supply crisis -- and fear of it can trigger turbulence in commodity markets and on stock exchanges.
The study, whose authenticity was confirmed to SPIEGEL ONLINE by sources in government circles, was not meant for publication. The document is said to be in draft stage and to consist solely of scientific opinion, which has not yet been edited by the Defense Ministry and other government bodies.(read more)

Raport intern al armatei germane: urmează o criză petrolieră dramatică

Armata germană (Bundeswehr) a analizat consecinţele scăderii producţiei de petrol asupra economiei mondiale: tulburări majore pe pieţele de materii prime şi la Burse, scrie Der Spiegel.

Subiectul este atât de exploziv din punct de vedere politic încât este neobişnuit faptul că o instituţie precum armata germană foloseşte conceptul de Peak Oil. Departamentul pentru Analize de Viitor, care ţine de Centrul pentru Transformarea Armatei, a analizat pentru prima oară dimensiunile problemei Peak Oil la nivel de politică de securitate. Grupul de autori, condus de locotenent colonelul Thomas Will, descrie în acest studiu consecinţele unei penurii ireversibile de materii prime, parţial cu cuvinte dramatice. Ei avertizează asupra deplasării echilibrului global de putere, a unor noi "relaţii de dependenţă", a unei pierderi în importanţă în cadrul naţiunilor occidentale industrializate, a unei "prăbuşiri complete a pieţelor" precum şi asupra unor grave crize economice şi politice, potrivit Der Spiegel, citat de Romania Libera.

Pentru că legea nu i-a obligat pe bancheri, în mod expres, să-i anunţe pe toţi clienţii că trebuie să semneze noile acte adiţionale, multe bănci au preferat, pur şi simplu, să nu facă nimic în acest sens. Motivul? Nesemnarea contractelor, conform legii, se consideră, pe 20 septembrie, adoptare tacită din partea clientului. Mai mult decât atât, actul adiţional va fi considerat aprobat tacit la această dată chiar dacă clientul a făcut o cerere sau o plângere împotriva băncii, fără a semna documentul. (Gandul.info)
